Parroco di Neive
Azienda
San Michele
Azienda San Michele was founded in 1973 in Neive, the heart of the Barbaresco production area, from an idea of the archpriest Don Giuseppe Cogno – the priest of the town – and three local winemakers.
Today the management of the winery is in the hands of Cogno Achille, brother of the archpriest, and the three sons of the founders: Lessio Renato, Nebiolo Alessandro and Cavallo Claudio. Each of the members independently takes care of a portion of the 6 hectares of vineyards, located in the Gallina, Cottà, Gaia and Albesani crus, which have always been counted among the noblest in the area.
The production is characterized solely by DOCG and DOC: Barbaresco DOCG, Moscato d’Asti DOCG, Roero Arneis DOCG, Barbera d’Alba DOC, Dolcetto d’Alba DOC and Langhe Nebbiolo DOC.
Since 2013, Azienda San Michele has equipped itself with a new winery, also in the Neive area, while maintaining the old address near the historic center and turning it into a wineshop.
A story that begins in 1973
in Neive
A winery founded by the parish priest of the village of Neive and by three local winemakers
Azienda San Michele is the direct heir and continuator of the quality policy of the Parroco di Neive winery, a reality founded by Don Giuseppe Cogno, known in Italy and abroad for the nobility of its wines and for the excellent quality/ratio price, which then ceased to exist after the death of the archpriest.
From the very beginning, Azienda San Michele has pursued the same objectives as the parent company, which stood out for its pursuit of quality even when this attitude was not economically rewarding.
Today the company is run by the 4 partners: Cogno Achille, brother of Don Giuseppe Cogno and trait d’union between the old winery and the current; Lessio Renato, passionate winemaker and tireless cellarman; Nebiolo Alessandro, winemaker, cellarman and symbol of business continuity; Cavallo Claudio, enologist and winemaker.
The production exclusively concerns DOC and DOCG wines, deriving from the 6 hectares of property.
The totality of the hectares of vineyards is in the Lower Langa area, with the exception of the Arneis vineyards which are located to the left of the Tanaro, in Roero, a land particularly suited to the production of this vine.
The vineyards are cultivated by the individual partners who subsequently collectively deal with the vinification and marketing of the wine obtained, meticulously following each production and commercial phase.
The reduced productions per hectare with extensive use of bunch thinning, the location of the vineyards, the cultivation and winemaking techniques, updated to technological progress while respecting tradition, guarantee the wholesomeness and excellence of the wines.
In consideration of the high divisions and displacements of the vineyards, by choice of cellar the Company does not divide its production of wines into different crus, rather trying to obtain the highest possible organoleptic quality from the amalgamation of the single grape varieties.
The aspiration of the San Michele company is in fact to obtain, for each vintage of each grape variety, an unchanged taste for the entire duration of the same, concentrating efforts in order to obtain the best possible result.
